The department is responsible for Diploma Thesis Design which is assigned to the student when choosing a specialization.

If the student wishes to work on a topic of another department which takes part in the teaching of the main or secondary specialization, then he/she shall notify it at his/her assigned department.

In some cases, the student may have the possibility to work on the topic of a department which does not take part in the teaching of the main or secondary specialization for which he/she shall acquire the permission of the Director of the MSc English program of the faculty. A precondition for acquiring such permission is a certification of his/her excellent scholastic record and professional work in the selected topic.

The student shall register to Diploma Thesis Design 2 subject of the department which announced the selected topic.

    7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge

To obtain the certificate, the student must prepare an MSc thesis which should prove that the candidate can do independent engineering work, he/she can apply engineering methods, he/she is capable of understanding the task, and to interpret and analyze the chosen solution.

The program of the second semester is completing the solution of the task and preparing the thesis.

    8. Synopsis

The topic of MSc thesis can be chosen from among the topics of the department of the faculty (preferably belonging to the main and secondary specialization selected by the student).

In the second semester, students need to complete work that they have begun in the first semester. Changing the topic is only possible if the student retakes Diploma Thesis Design 1 which means that a 30-credit task shall be assigned again.

The topic offered by another faculty, university or external company (economic organization) is only acceptable if the head of the department of the main or secondary specialization supports it and provides a departmental supervisor. The external supervisor, approved by the head of the department, can be a professional with university or master (MSc) degree. The student obtained the permission of the Director of the MSc English program of the faculty.

When selecting the topic of MSc thesis and preparing the thesis itself, students must make sure to avoid violating the interest of the company (economic organization) so that his/her work can be reviewed. In some exceptional cases, leading companies or economic corporations in the line of research and development may announce secret/confidential thesis topics for which the department must obtain the permission before the registration of Diploma Thesis Design 1.

It is not possible to assign a common topic to two or more students in the second semester. In the thesis, the student shall declare that it is the result of his/her work. In case of a common topic of the thesis, it must be marked which subtask was not written independently.

    9. Method of instruction Independent work with the help of a supervisor.
    10. Assessment During the study period: obtaining a mid-term grade

The subject is completed if the student has done preparatory work and is ready for Diploma Thesis Design 2 subject.

    The schedule of mid-term supervision:

    • The supervisor continuously keeps a record of the schedule, the progress of student work and preparation. If the student does not work at the department, he/she shall regularly report to the supervisor about his/her work.
    • Submission of the thesis is not the precondition of obtaining a mid-term grade. The grade is suggested by the supervisor
    • The student completes the subject if he/she has done the preparation work throughout the two semesters and he/she can finish the thesis project without the help of a supervisor.
    Submission of the thesis project

The deadline for the submission of the thesis project is the last day of the study period in which exam period the student wishes to defend his/her thesis.

The supervisor of the department decides whether the thesis project can be submitted. The external supervisor gives a recommendation for the condition of the submission in case a topic was given by another faculty, university or external company (economic organization). The condition of submission concerning content is the presentation of the solution of all the subtasks which were determined in the announcement and which were to be carried out independently. If the solution of a subtask is impossible, then the thesis can only be submitted with the permission of the head of the department, but the fact and reason of impossibility must be stated in the subchapter of the subtask.

The formal requirements of the thesis:
    The thesis shall be submitted:
    • in one copy in writing, in one volume with hardcover, with supplements if necessary and
    • in one copy in electronic form, according to the regulations of the faculty.

The thesis of two or more students with common topic shall be prepared in separate volumes and separate electronic copies.

The thesis is made public unless the dean has encrypted it. In the latter case, the thesis becomes public in 3 years after the successful final examination. The operator of the faculty’s thesis portal ensures the disclosure of the thesis. The department informs the student about the preparation, submission and the defense of the thesis when issuing it.

The Final Examination Board states the mark of the thesis.

    11. Recaps

In some exceptional cases, the thesis may be submitted until the end of the delayed completion period. If it is submitted later than this period, the final exam can only be taken during the next final exam period.
Unaccepted thesis practice cannot be post-completed. In this case, the subject has to be retaken in the next semester.

The thesis that was unaccepted (failed) by the Final Examination Committee has to be resubmitted. The Final Examination Committee may prescribe the correction or the rewriting of the thesis. The thesis can only be resubmitted once.

    12. Consultations The practice of thesis plan and the preparation of the thesis project is supervised by the department’s supervisor or the external supervisor. Besides the external supervisor, a departmental supervisor needs to be provided. The department’s supervisor is a full-time or part-time instructor, researcher, teacher, department engineer or Ph.D. candidate of the faculty.

The external supervisor, approved by the head of the department, can be an external professional with university or master (MSc) degree. An external supervisor is necessary if the topic was not announced by the department, or if no professionals are available at the department which is related to the topic.
    13. References, textbooks and resources Specialized, related literature necessary to elaborate on the topic is provided by the leading supervisor, or the student is expected to collect and refer to the resources under the supervision of the leading supervisor.
