    7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge

The aim of the subject is to develop the ability to select components of embedded systems, design the system and integrate the components. This includes selection of communication interfaces and protocols, design of information processing algorithms and software structure.

    8. Synopsis

Introduction. Building blocks of embedded systems. Requirements and properties. Ambient systems.

    Introduction of a use-case:

    • active noise control (ANC) system with multiple sensors (microphones) and actuators (loudspeakers) on a wireless sensor network. System design.
    • signal processing tasks in the application. Communication and clock synchronization
    • rapid prototyping system, as building block of the ANC.

Building blocks of embedded system and corresponding tasks

    • analog signal processing, signal conditioning: which tasks to solve in the analog and which in the digital domain?
    • processing units: Microcontrollers, Digital Signal Processors (DSP)
    • reconfigurable architecture: FPGA
    • signal processing: multirate signal processing (decimation, interpolation), filter implementation, spectral analysis. Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS)
    • Design of software architecture, decision considerations. Design for testability, for real-time behavior, for reusability etc.
    • Signal converters (ADC, DAC)
    • Communication within and between embedded systems. Real-time and safety critical systems (FlexRay)
    • Power supply: batteries, filtering, overvoltage and transient protection. Charging characteristics of batteries. Environment and energy aware design.

    System integration:

    • System design. Systematic design methods. Separation of hardware and software functions. Component specification, design of communication, system integration. Design of user interface. Testing, monitoring and diagnosis.
    • Investigation of a use-case
