7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge The main objective of this course is to teach the operation and technical paradigms of today’s modern mobile and wireless communication systems. Focus is on the prectical issues interesting for electrical engineers, such as: processes and basic operation of radio interfaces, hardware components and architecture of networking equipments. We also put emphasis on the practical implementation and the application of these in real products.
8. Synopsis Introduction, basics of mobile networks:
•    motivations, informations about the specialization, logical architecture of the specialization, interdependencies among subjects
•    broader context of mobile networking as a profession: national and global data regarding this profession: estimate of number of enterprises, number of employees , gross income, share from GDP and short term forecast of these
•    overview of the contents of this semester, explanation of the logical structure of this subject
•    general architecture of mobile networks, paradigm of frequency reuse, cellular theorem
•    logical and physical mobile network topologies, examplified through real networks
Basic mobile and wireless principles
•    problems of user mobility, draft solutions
•    basic concepts of wireless transmission at the level of introduction/refreshment of previously learned: complex representation of baseband signal, bandwidth, carrier frequency, noise/interference, Shannon capacity, attenuation, fading, modulation, intermediate frequency, up/downconversion, filtering, digital filtering, error correction coding, amplification, etc.
GSM system
•    architecture of the network, roles of network elements, logical and protocol architecture
•    developed versions of GSM architecture (based on packet switching)
•    practical implementations, possible configurations, special vendor solutions
GSM radio interface
•    basics of GSM radio: time and frequency division, frame structure, logical channels

o    operation of 3G radio interface: modulation, coding, physical signal processing, channels, logical channels, transport channels, slot and frame structure, available bitrates
3G, 3G developed networks:
•    new paradigm: QoS on the radio interface
o    3G QoS, QoS classes, relation of end to end QoS and radio QoS, radio scheduling methods for QoS
•    further developments of 3G: HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+: methods for increased bitrate, new radio solutions:
o    application of AMC, QoS, scheduling
•    development of 3G functional architecture and equipment
o    RNC emulation, multi-standard base station platforms, etc.
