    7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge The aim of the subject is introducing the Internet based media streaming technics, inlcuding the network level supports of the real-time streaming, e.g. the IP multicast.
    8. Synopsis

    Fundamentals of the media streaming:

    • Networking infrastructure, unicasting, multicasting
    • Architecture of the media services, e.g. RTP – Real-time Transport Protocol, RTSP – Real-Time Streaming Protocol, MMS, HTTP; MPEG2-TS, ASF, etc.
    • Video compressing methods, e.g. DivX, Xvid, libavcodec family, H.264 implementations, x264, Quicktime, Nero Digital, Elecard etc.
    • Stream serves: Helix, Quicktime és Darwin, Windows Media Services, Videolan, Clipstream, Flumotion, Flash Media Server and clients: RealPlayer, Quicktime player, Windows MediaPlayer, VLC
    • Adaptivity of the media server systems (scalable codecs, transcoding, etc.)

    Service architecture based on media streaming:

    • IP TV, P2P tv, web-based broadcasting, WebTV, interactive television
    • Personal broadcasting systems: YouTube, Videa, Index video, and peercasting
    • Network based games: MMORPG, MMORTS. Scalability.
    • Social networks, Web 2.0 service architecture, video chat, video-based monitoring systems
    • quality insurance, online quality monitoring technics, algorithms
    • Challenges of the commercial services: accounting, ads, etc.
    9. Method of instruction

    3 hours/week lectures and computer based demonstration with examples.

    10. Assessment

    Requirement for the signature: final mark >= 2 (satisfactory).

    Final mark is based on the result of the mid-term test.

    Threshold for satisfactory results: minimum 40% of the maximal score.
