    7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge

This is the third subject within the framework of the optical side-specialization. This subject will discuss the optical networks that are built of the optical components learned within the two earlier subjects of this side-specialization.

The aim of the subject is to provide the basic knowledge on design, architecture, operation, maintenence, management, control, routing, protection, traffic engineering in multi-layer and multi-domain access - metro - backbone networks. The subject will also overview the basics of mathematical modeling of optical networks, that will enable understanding some of the above functionality.

    8. Synopsis
Part I: Optical Backbone and metro aggregation networks (10 presentations + 4 exercises)

    Week 1:
    ·         Optical network functionality
    ·         Optical network generations
    ·         Switched optical networks
o   Towards optical packet switching: OFS/OBS/OPS

    9. Method of instruction

    oral presentation, laboratory work

    10. Assessment

    a.   Mid-term exam close to the half of the semester, roughly 50% of the material covered by the subject,
Where the knowledge of the student must be at least 50%

    b.   Exam

    11. Recaps

Repeated mid-term exam is on the first week after the teaching is finished.

After that there is no possibility for repeating the mid-term exam.

    12. Consultations

Whenever needed starting from the first presentation up to the last exam.
The consultations are not fixed in advance, but are available anytime upon agreement.
