    7. Objectives, learning outcomes and obtained knowledge

The objective of this laboratory subject is to supplement the knowledge taught in the theoretical subjects of the specialization with practice. The teaching of the subject take place in the course of laboratory exercises, which means guided measurements on an operating telecommunication test network covering the specialization. Evaluation of exercises happens based on the report compiled from the results of the measurement tasks.

    8. Synopsis
    1. Interfészek vizsgálata (E1, STM-1, GBE) – Interface testing
    2. "In-circuit" mérések ISDN és VoIP hálózati elemeken – "In circuit" testing of ISDN and VoIP network elements
    3. Alapsávi digitális jelátvitel rézkábelen (vonali kódolás, HDSL) – Baseband data transmission on copper cable (line coding, HDSL)
    4. Digitális vonalszakasz kiegyenlítése (Transzverzális szűrő) – Equalization of a digital line section (The transversal filter)
    5. Mérések lokális számítógéphálózaton (802.3) – Tests on a computer network
    6. Az egyetemi optikai hálózat vizsgálata OTDR-el – Testing of the optical network of the university with OTDR
    7. Adatátvitel hozzáférési hálózaton (ADSL2, ADSL2+, VLAN, WLAN, WAN protokollok ) – Data transmission over access network (ADSL2, ADSL2+, VLAN, WLAN, WAN protocols)
    8. Az elektromágneses kompatibilitás (EMC) alapvető rádiófrekvekciás mérései – Base radiofrequency testing of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
    9. IP átvitel MPLS hálózaton – IP transmission on MPLS network
    10. IP Multimedia Subsystem
    9. Method of instruction

The instruction happens in the form of 4-hour long laboratory exercises. During the semester each student has to perform out 7 exercises. The 7 exercises can be freely chosen from the 8 topics selected and announced by the instructors of the subject at the beginning of the semester These exercises will be selected from the topics mentioned in the Synopsis.

Students work on the exercises in pairs according to the schedule based on the registration made at the start of the semester. Students have to be prepared themselves for the exercises with the help of the tutorial available in electronic or printed format. Preparedness will be checked with a test in the first ten minutes of the exercise. Student has to repeat the exercise if he/she fails or misses in 2 or more questions from the 5.

During the exercise the measurement tasks signed as mandatory in the measurement instructions should be performed out. The results of the measurement tasks should be included to a report – template is available in electronic format. A student group may prepare a joint report. Also optional measurement tasks can be done in order to receive better mark for the exercise. At the of the exercise teacher give a mark for the exercise for each student and certify with his signature that students completed the exercise.

    10. Assessment

Assessment should be fulfilled during the semester.
Each student will receive a midterm mark at the end of the semester, if he/she completed 7 exercises and received to each exercise at least pass (2) mark. The midterm mark will be calculated as the rounded average of the exercise marks.

The method of the determination of an exercise mark:

    • Basis of the mark – the student receives it if the test was perfect and all of the mandatory tasks are complete: satisfactory (3)
    • Factors increasing the basis:
      • Evaluation of the results of the measurements: +1
      • Completion of the facultative task(s): +1
    • Factors decreasing the basis:
      • Bad or missing measurement results: -1
      • 1 failed or missed answer in the test: -1
      • Report which is not worthy of an engineer (confused, contains numerous grammatical errors, etc.): -1
    11. Recaps

Each student can repeat one failed or missed mid-term exercise during the semester. There is no such possibility in the examination period.

    12. Consultations Consultation possibilities with the instructor of different exercises are available by appointment.

    13. References, textbooks and resources The tutorial contains the description of the objectives, devices, methods and tasks of each laboratory exercise. The tutorial is available in electronic format on the server of the department (http://alpha.tmit.bme.hu/meresek/) or partially in printed format in the laboratory rooms. The knowledge of the material of relating subject(s) and the general purpose measuring devices are supposed in the measurement instructions.
